We invited Ortis Deley to take a look behind the scenes at our 5-acre UK manufacturing facility near Bath to learn more about the processes involved in the design and manufacture of our award-winning glass partitions and doors. Ortis takes a tour around our revolutionary powder-coat line with Manufacturing Director, Dave Booth.
State-of-the-art powder coat line
This area is home to Optima’s state-of-the-art powder coat line, coating over 1100 pieces per day. A relatively quick process compared to other coating methods, a full cycle is completed in less than 90 mins. The technology has opened the door to a whole range of powder coating solutions, meaning they can now offer a great selection of bespoke textured and coloured finishes
Firstly, the material is cleaned by the automated three stage prewash facility before the application of a dry in place coating. This improves the adhesion of the powder and provides a corrosion resistance to the material. The aluminium then enters a drying oven to remove excess moisture before applying the powder.
What is powder coating?
Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Unlike conventional liquid paint which is delivered via an evaporating solvent. Powder coating is typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat. As powder coating does not have a liquid carrier, it can produce thicker coatings than conventional liquid paint without running or sagging, and powder coating produces minimal appearance differences.
Eliminating harmful substances
Because no carrier fluid evaporates away, the coating process emits few volatile organic compounds (VOC), reducing or eliminating substances harmful to both the environment and human life. We take extra precautions to keep our employees safe when powder coating our aluminium. Our trained personnel wear protective suits, as well as goggles, masks and gloves when manning these impressive powder coating booths.
The powder coating is applied to the metal objects using an electrostatic gun. The gun applies a negative charge to the powder, which is then sprayed towards the grounded metal by mechanical air spraying and then accelerated toward the workpiece by the powerful electrostatic charge.
Here Optima employ a number of guns within a reciprocator unit which moves the guns to the correct position via computer control. Excess powder drops to the floor of the spray booth and is swept by compressed air into a cyclone unit which allows the powder to be recycled, minimising waste. Look here’s one fresh off the line now!
Finishes
We have a wide selection of finishes that can be applied to any of our glass partitions and door frames. Find our mixture of colours and textures below, which introduces another dimension of individuality to any glass partition or door frame. Another element that makes our service that much more personal.
Poweder coating: Enhancing our bespoke glass partitioning
Our advanced powder-coating process enhances the bespoke options for their aluminium framed glass partitions, offering a variety of textured and coloured finishes. This revolutionary system aligns with our commitment to environmental sustainability and efficiency, producing high-quality, durable coatings with minimal VOC emissions, thus preserving quality while promoting environmentally conscious practices.
