Late Fall Camping in the Monongahela National Forest

In late October we visited one of our favorite camping locations in West Virginia. Stone Coal Dispersed Camping area. Located in the Mon National Forest between Huttonsville and Durbin, Stone Coal features a handful of sites along the Shaver's Fork of the Cheat River. Some even have a beautiful river view.
Stone Coal Campground has recently reopened after being closed for a couple of years to complete upgrades to the roadway, reconfigure camp sights, and add pit toilets and bear proof trash cans. It's nice to see these recent upgrades.
Starting January 1, 2026 the Forest Service will begin charging a $15 per night fee for camping in Stone Coal Campground so we wanted to get one final weekend of free camping in before the change.
