Orhan Gazi (Orhan I)
Orhan Gazi was the second ruler of the Ottoman Beylik, reigning from 1323 to 1362. He was the son of Osman I, the founder of the Ottoman state, and played a crucial role in transforming a small frontier principality into a growing empire.
As a Ruler
Orhan Gazi was a strategic and patient leader. Unlike his father’s warrior-focused rule, Orhan emphasized state-building, administration, and long-term stability. He ruled with pragmatism rather than sheer force.
Military Achievements
Conquered Bursa in 1326, making it the first Ottoman capital
Expanded Ottoman control into northwestern Anatolia
Established the first standing Ottoman army, including early Janissary-style units
