Been away from video editing for a bit — just got DaVinci Resolve back up and running. This is a quick reel from the weekend to start getting back at it.
Trip Report:
A few days earlier on the 21st, I set out for a single-day Oregon Butte trip, but was met with fresh snow and unexpected snow drifts on the lower sections of the Kendall Skyline Road and I forgot to bring chains in my fwd vehicle. I estimated about 16 miles one-way, and at least some of that needing snowshoes. I turned back after 9 miles and a quick climb to Peak 5880’. Pain from a pair of boots I shouldn't have been wearing wasn’t worth pushing on.
This time I resolved to try and get to Panjab TH instead, which seemed to make sense with it's lower elevation. However just around the bend past the Kendall Skyline junction on Tucannon Rd was a big long snow drift that I immediately got stuck and high centered on compact/icy snow in my Rav4. Chains only made it worse as the snow in the center didn't give way with all the weight on it. By the tracks I could see, higher clearance 4x4 looked to be able to pass fine though.
If it wasn't for friendly guy a his three young boys who came up in a truck and helped pull me out I think I would have been there for hours trying to dig with inadequate tools.
So once again, I went south on Kendall Skyline. Just 4 days later this time but was able to drive over a mile further.
Started with a mountain bike at 3:15 PM, stashed it 4 miles in. Could only ride the southern aspects of the road.
Continued on foot, set up camp near Little Turkey Tail with plenty of light left. Got a few photos of the fox that circled the tent for an hour in the night.
In the morning trekked 5 miles east to Oregon Butte, then back to the car. Last entry in the register notebook on the front of the lookout was last October. Didn't bring snowshoes this time and was a good call overall. Enough crusted over snowmobile tracks to help ascending in the softer parts.
Total: 26.5 miles and 5,150 ft of elevation gain.
