This guitar tip is about one of the most important left hand technique guitar issues. It is to not let your fourth finger 'lock out'.

This is something that I have seen in hundreds of guitar students over the years, and it's probably something that I did in my early days too.

As I show in the video, when playing chords of scales some guitarists unintentionally let the fourth finger straighten out; specifically, the middle joint of the fourth finger.

This is usually a symptom of an underdeveloped fourth finger, compounded by bad left hand technique. Fretting strings in this way is cumbersome and potentially painful - an absolute no-no for any guitarist - and it needs to be corrected.

To do so all you need to do is clock up time slowly using your fourth finger correctly: slightly curled, just like the other fingers of the left hand.

I demonstrate a couple of ways to do this but really almost any simple exercise will do, as long as you can focus on keeping the fourth finger curled.

As I've highlighted in some of my guitar articles, good left hand technique on guitar, like right hand technique, is not something that many of us are born with. At various stages of our guitar playing life most of us need to make both fundamental changes and gradual refinements.

Try to resist the temptation to assume that your current technique is just fine, or that you're stuck with it. Identifying and fixing our flaws in technique can make a huge difference to our skills as guitarists.

This issue of the 4th finger 'locking out' is almost certainly one of the most important left hand technique guitar issues to fix. So, if you have this problem then I encourage you to commit to fixing it - right now!
