Varas Kara Ruda (Kader Ali), widely known as Bhagat Karabhai, was a devoted Ismaili missionary, mystic, and reformer from Saurashtra (c.1881–1931). Educated at Alfred College, Rajkot, he combined scholarship (English, Gujarati, Sanskrit and mastery of ginans) with deep meditation and yogic practice. After service in the Rajkot Police (1902–1914) — where his honesty and courage earned him promotion and wide respect — he resigned to devote himself fully to waez and community reform.
Kara Ruda taught across India, Rangoon and Karachi, founded a religious school in Rangoon on the Imam’s instruction, trained waezin (including women), and memorized hundreds of ginans. His unique achievements include reforming the lawless Miyana community at Maliya (reducing crime and encouraging farming), introducing practical measures that increased jamatkhana attendance, and distributing rewards to uplift his staff. Known for intense nightly meditation alongside his wife Sonbai, he received high praise from Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah and was honoured with the title Varas.
This video explores his life: childhood struggles, police-era reforms, missionary journeys, spiritual discipline, writings on ginans, and the lasting barakah of his service.
Conclusion: Varas Kara Ruda’s life shows how deep spiritual practice, moral courage, and compassionate leadership transform individuals and communities — a timeless model for Ismaili and spiritual seekers worldwide.
