President Trump on Wednesday threw cold water on the prospects of a coronavirus relief deal coming together quickly, just hours after his own top aides projected optimism that negotiations were moving in the right direction. He came out and tweeted that he “just doesn’t see any way Nancy Pelosi and Cryin' Chuck Schumer will be willing to do what is right for our great American workers, or our wonderful USA itself, on Stimulus.” The president cited Democrats' push for state and local aid as a major hurdle. He went on to say that the bill shouldn’t focus on state and local governments but it ”should take care of our people. It wasn’t their fault that the Plague came in from China!"

Speaking to reporters later Wednesday, White House communications director Alyssa Farah likewise said that officials were optimistic there could be “some movement” on a potential deal within 48 hours. She told reporters at the White House that “the president's position is we're willing to go up on the number for PPP [Paycheck Protection Program] loans and the direct payments.” She goes on to explain how “some of the issues still surround state and local and some of the other issues but we're at the table, conversations are happening. I think it's kind of the best place we've been in, so cautious optimism."

Senate Democrats blocked Republicans’ attempt to pass a $500 billion coronavirus stimulus bill Wednesday as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin make a last-ditch push to strike a relief deal before the 2020 election. The GOP tried to advance its bill, similar to one Democrats opposed last month. But the measure failed in a 51-44 party-line vote, falling short of the 60 votes needed. This $500 billion bill would’ve provided aid to small businesses, $300 a week in extra unemployment insurance payments, and the ability to deduct some charitable donations while taking the standard income tax deduction.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif and Mark Meadows both said they are optimistic about a deal passing within the next 24 hours. Pelosi had and interview on MSNBC and said that “she thinks we have a prospect for an agreement.” She goes on to explain that “none of it is insurmountable if you want to make a decision.” And ultimately she said that her and Steven Mnuchin wouldn’t be meeting if they didn’t think they could come to an agreement before the election. Pelosi’s spokesman, Drew Hammill, reported more progress after the meeting between Mnuchin and Pelosi yesterday. He said “The Speaker & Secretary Mnuchin spoke today at 2:30 pm for 48 minutes. Today's conversation brings us closer to being able to put pen to paper to write legislation. With the exchange of legislative language, we are better prepared to reach compromise on several priorities.” Hammier goes on to explain what the differences are right now and the few areas they are still figuring out and he said that “differences continue to be narrowed on health priorities, including language providing a national strategic testing and contract tracing plan, but more work needs to be done to ensure that schools are the safest places in America for children to learn. But ultimately good news is that he said “the Speaker and Secretary plan to speak again tomorrow hopefully with further guidance from committee chairs as they work to resolve open questions.
