The Chandi Devi Temple is one of the most sacred Hindu temples in Haridwar, dedicated to Goddess Chandi, a fierce form of Goddess Durga. Perched on the Neel Parvat of the Shivalik Hills, the temple is a major pilgrimage destination and is considered a Siddh Peetha — a place where devotees’ wishes are believed to be granted. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Chandi was created from the energies of the gods to defeat the demon kings Shumbha and Nishumbha, who had overpowered the gods. After a fierce battle, Chandi Devi vanquished the demons at the site where the temple now stands. The place is thus revered as a battlefield of divine victory and power.
The main idol of Goddess Chandi Devi is believed to have been installed in the 8th century by Adi Shankaracharya. However, the temple structure as it stands today was constructed in 1929 by Suchat Singh, the then King of Kashmir. The temple showcases traditional North Indian temple architecture with a sanctum housing the idol of Goddess Chandi, surrounded by smaller shrines. The temple can be reached either by trekking a 3km uphill road or by ropeway. Chandi Devi Temple is considered one of the three Siddh Peethas of Haridwar, along with Mansa Devi Temple and Maya Devi Temple.
