A very disturbing trend is being seen in corporate India... that you may not have noticed yet.
The retirement age is moving closer to 45 instead of 60...
And I don’t mean it in a good way.
I’m seeing a number of corporate professionals in their mid-40s who are setting up LLPs on the side to say this is going to be my consulting entity that I might need in the next couple of years...
You ask any CA firm in urban India, and they’ll tell you they’ve been observing this.
So while years of experience matters in certain professions like Doctors and Lawyers...
It’s areas of Sales, Marketing, Product Management, Operations and Tech... where companies are feeling that the people at the top are really expensive and not up to date with what’s relevant today.
And because in a lot of cases companies can’t fire them right away, they start creating other departments with younger people... that work independently of the senior folk, and in lower manpower cost aim to drive larger value, and also get more attention from the leadership.
This has led to a lot of politics in mid to high level positions where the chances of promotion are almost inexistent, and these professionals know they may not get the same package if they try to make a lateral shift.
So these people are trying to take freelancing roles and consulting assignments over the weekends, hoping they can collect a few clients over 2-3 years to phase out of corporate.
This is reason why you are seeing a surge in interest not just towards entrepreneurship but also financial independence to retire early.
This interest is not driven by excitement or aspiration, but a lot because of fear of the unknown future in jobs.
In fact the demand for younger talent has become so high that ISB, where the average experience at my time was over 6 years... now is reduced to 4... and they’re also starting a 2 year program for folks fresh out of undergrad because the Consulting firms want younger talent.
There is a huge demand for upskilling schools for professionals in their 40s... so either you get upskilled and get a promotion, or start a school to skill them.
