(6 May 2019) An Israeli blacksmith says he is using his skills to transform weapons of destruction into emblems of peace.
Yaron Bob, 47, takes twisted scrap metal from Gaza rockets and mortar shells that have landed in his southern Israeli town and turns them into sculptures of doves and roses, as well as Jewish religious objects, such as menorahs and mezuzahs.
The intense weekend fighting between Israel and militant groups in Gaza Strip came to a halt early on Monday.
But the escalation killed 25 on the Gaza side, both militants and civilians, while on the Israeli side four civilians were killed by incoming fire.
Bob recalls his own brush with death ten years ago, in which a rocket fired from Gaza fell beside him.
It inspired him to turn the very weapons that he says have traumatised his community into sculptures of beauty and prosperity.
He says of swapping his career in Information Technology for blacksmithing: "it keeps me calm and sane, not insane, so this is my way of life now."
Bob collects the rusty rocket metal from the police and army, and sometimes even his own backyard.
He also collects remnants from Israel's Iron Dome missile that intercepts rockets coming from Gaza in order to create mezuzahs - a prayer sign traditionally hung on doors in order to bring good fortune.
He later sells them online all over the world.
"I'm turning darkness into light, I'm turning the instrument of death and destruction into a symbol of beauty, peace and prosperity," he said.
