Elderly people or seniors (age 65+) have unique health care needs, and experience age-related changes in the functioning of their bodies and brains.
While most mental illnesses are thought to present earlier in life, with most appearing by age 25, some mental illnesses can manifest or present differently later in life. Older adults are not immune to the challenges of living with a mental health condition, and some do not receive treatment because of the shame of stigma or the fear that it will be dismissed as an inevitable part of the aging process. Whether you are an older adult or the loved one or caregiver of an older adult, it’s important to be knowledgeable and watchful.
In Focus on Aging: Mental Health and Older Adults , Tam Cooper, LICDC-CS, LISW-S, Director of Behavioral Health Services at Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging., provided a “mental health of older adults 101” overview and demystified some of the myths and misconceptions around the intersections of mental illness and aging. She also provided practical information about resources for caregivers and loved ones of older adults with mental health conditions.
