This week we take you back to North Wales, this time to the lake side town of Llanberis where we visit the National Slate Museum at the foot of the mighty Dinorwic Quarry, once home to the maintenance and production workshops for the Quarry it now offers a fascinating insight into the past to discover how the industry shaped the area from the mid 19th century.
We then take you for a ride down some of the original Quarry railway which took
the finished slate down to the nearby port.
The journey takes you past the 13th century Dolbadarn Castle, across possibly Britain's shortest river and past Llanberis' twin lakes. From Llanberis the train runs non-stop through the Padarn Country Park, joining the 1845 slate railway route to run along the shores of Lake Padarn to Penllyn, and giving stunning views of Snowdon, the highest peak in England and Wales.
