Searching Abandoned Miners Village Ruins. Hibernia, NJ

Описание: Scanning Google maps with LiDAR layouts, I noticed some depressions and several rows of rectangular holes on the top of Wildcat Ridge in New Jersey. They clearly were man-made and looked like traces of a settlement existed here over a hundred years ago.

Spending a couple of evenings, I superficially studied the suspicious area, and research was not in vain.

I managed to find a book “Iron Mines & Mining in New Jersey, Geological Survey of New Jersey” (vol. VII), authored by William Shirley Bayley and published in 1910.

According to the maps in this book, there indeed was a large mining village at the top of the mountain.

At one time a few hundred workers were employed to work in the mines, tunnel, and shafts at Hibernia. Even though very little remains of their former settlement on top of the mountain, at one time there were dozens of houses, a school, a couple of saloons, cemetery, and even a hotel. Based on the pattern of dwellings shown on the old map, they were probably built by the mining companies to house miners and their families. The decline of coal industry in the region forced miners to abandon their houses and the top of the mountain got deserted in the late of 1800s.

Today, looking around the barren and dense forest up here, it's really hard to imagine that any sort of village ever existed.

Today I’m heading to North Jersey to find and explore this abandoned place.

On my way back to home, stopped to take a look at Split Rock Furnace ruins.

It was erected in 1862 by Andrew B. Cobb. The 32-foot high charcoal-fired stone furnace was built to smelt magnetite ore into the iron needed for the Civil War. The furnace operated for only about ten years, and was abandoned in the 1872. It was the last of its kind build in Morris County, representing the end of the era of charcoal furnaces.
