Background and Rationale
Nakivale refugee settlement is the 8th largest refugee camp in the world. It currently hosts 171,387 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Somalia, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. Refugee women in Nakivale experience high levels of poverty, with many working as unskilled laborers in agriculture. Their limited access to resources, technology, and time-saving practices, along with a dependence on rainfall, results in low crop yields and significant post-harvest losses. Despite efforts to support refugees, these women continue to face considerable socio-economic challenges, including limited access to income-generating activities and food insecurity. Goat farming has proven to be a viable solution for improving livelihoods by providing a reliable source of income and enhancing nutritional status. This project aims to scale up existing efforts, addressing gender inequalities and promoting sustainable development.
Project Goal:
This project aims at empowering refugee women in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda, through goat farming.
