Come along as I take you through our day at Smir Water Park in Tetouan, Morocco, with Jack and Camryn. We were excited for a fun family outing, and for the most part, we had a great time. The park is beautiful, the slides are exciting, and the energy was perfect for a summer day.
But unfortunately, something happened that left us with unnecessary frustration and sadness.
When Camryn went to try the body slide, we were shocked to be told she couldn’t go on — simply because she is a girl. At first, I assumed it was a language issue or maybe a safety misunderstanding. But after asking for clarification, the staff confirmed it was because they believed a girl could “lose her virginity” on that slide.
This explanation was inaccurate, offensive, and completely unscientific. Virginity is not something that can be “lost” on a water slide, and the fact that this was said about a child is especially disturbing. They explained that in Morocco, “a woman’s virginity is valued,” and therefore, girls are not allowed on certain slides.
To make matters worse, there were no signs posted with these restrictions. And even if there were, a sign saying “boys only” would never be acceptable. Rules like this reinforce gender discrimination and limit girls from having the same fun and experiences as boys.
We still made the most of our day and had some wonderful moments, but this situation put a damper on what should’ve been a carefree outing. I’m sharing this not to shame, but to raise awareness about how important it is to challenge misinformation and ensure equal treatment for all children, regardless of gender.
Let’s keep having the hard conversations that lead to better experiences for everyone.
