Description
This video documents Roast 50 in the Coffee | One Roast at a Time project, a Colombia Supremo reference roast on the Gene Café CBR-301.
The goal of this roast wasn’t to chase numbers or optimise a profile. Instead, it was about observing how the machine behaves and establishing a stable reference roast that future experiments can be compared against.
This batch was roasted 250g in → 209.9g out and cooling was initiated at 13:21, producing a balanced medium roast.
Interestingly, first crack was not clearly detected, which occasionally happens on the Gene Café due to drum rotation and airflow. Instead of relying on crack, the roast was guided by colour, aroma, and overall roast progression, cues roasters have relied on long before digital logging existed.
Reference roasts are valuable because they create a baseline. Once you understand how a stable roast behaves, you can begin exploring changes in timing, airflow, or starting conditions with much greater confidence.
This roast becomes part of a growing dataset of logged roasts used to better understand Gene Café CBR-301 roast behaviour.
