Travel Roots has partnered with Desia and Heritage Tours to promote ecotourism and responsible travel in the tribal communities and rural villages in Odisha, India. This experience gets you off the beaten track to experience grassroots tourism at its best. The Desia Project was started last year with the goal to preserve the rich tribal culture through a local tourism development initiative. Special focus is given to empower the local women below poverty line through capacity building and training programs on various initiatives including arts & craft development.

The ethics of this project are based on principles of Ecotourism and Responsible Travel where the portion of the earning is used to protect the local environment, bring sustainable development to the region and to provide authentic rural and ethnic experiences to the culture & nature-loving guests who come to explore this less known but spectacular region. We strongly believe that tourism is a tool that empowers the community but also provides an opportunity for visitors to meet another culture and bring peace & harmony.

Since the Desia Project has only been up and running for a year, assistance is required for capacity building programs for the local guides and employees from the community. There are also opportunities to assist with construction work, women empowerment programs, training programs, healthcare, teaching English, tourism program development, and student research projects.

3 Week Placements are available for volunteering starting from April to December 2015. Longer stays and research programs can be arranged upon request.
