Title: “Marketplace Disciple: God in Your Work”
Text: Genesis 30:25, 26, 30
By Dr. Musa K. Zondo
Beloved, when Joseph was born, something awakened in Jacob. Genesis 30:25 says, “After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, ‘Send me on my way so I can go back to my own homeland.’” This was not just a desire for relocation—it was the birth of destiny.
When purpose is born in you, slavery becomes intolerable. Jacob realized: I am not meant to build someone else’s house at the cost of losing mine. I am not just a worker—I’m a covenant man.
Marketplace Ministry Begins with Focus
Jacob’s success wasn’t determined by the size of his job, but by the size of his God. We must shift our focus from our job title to the One who called us. Whether janitor or CEO, the Kingdom impact lies in who you serve, not where you serve.
Foundation: Who You Serve Matters
Jacob tells Laban, “You know how I have served you and how your livestock has fared with me.” (Gen 30:29) Your foundation is defined by the God you serve. Serving man alone keeps you in bondage; serving God sets you up for dominion—even in another man’s field.
Beyond Salvation: Fulfilment Is in God
Laban became wealthy because of Jacob, yet he never walked in the covenant. Riches without relationships lead to emptiness. Jacob knew that his fulfilment wasn't in Laban’s herds but in God’s promises.
Believers Are Blessings
Laban admitted, “I have learned by experience that the Lord has blessed me because of you.” (v27) Believer, you are not just an employee—you are a conduit of blessing. Your presence shifts atmospheres and blesses businesses. When you walk in, the Kingdom walks in.
Untapped Potential
Jacob had more in him than he had ever realized. Many of us are sitting on God-given genius, creativity, strategy, and favours, but we settle in the marketplace as survivors instead of influencers. God did not call us to blend in but to break through!
Serve with Kingdom Influence
Marketplace discipleship means you show up in boardrooms with divine wisdom, in classrooms with Kingdom principles, in factories with integrity and love. The church is the training ground; the marketplace is the mission field.
Relationship Reward
Jacob’s prosperity came not because he chased wealth but because he followed God. Our walk with God will always outlast our pay check. Stay rooted in relationship, and the blessings will pursue you.
Final Declaration:
Jacob said, “The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been.” (Genesis 30:30) That is the testimony of a true marketplace disciple: You carry God with you, and where you go, blessing follows.
May you rise in your workplace as a Kingdom ambassador. May the world recognize the favour on your life, and may you never again settle for servitude when sonship is your destiny. Amen.
