📜 1. The Ajivika Sect: The Philosophy of Absolute Fate (Niyati)
The Ajivikas were one of the most enigmatic "Nastika" (heterodox) sects of ancient India. Founded by Makkhali Gosala in the 5th century BCE, they were contemporaries—and rivals—of the Buddha and Mahavira.
Core Philosophy: Their central doctrine was Niyati (Destiny). They believed that human effort (Purushartha) was useless because every event in the universe was pre-ordained.
Lifestyle: Known for extreme asceticism, Ajivika monks often wandered naked and practiced severe penance.
Royal Patronage: Despite their fatalistic view, they received immense support from Mauryan emperors. Emperor Ashoka and his grandson Dasharatha famously dedicated the Barabar and Nagarjuni Caves to them.

Bhagavatism marks the transition from Vedic ritualism to personal devotion. It eventually became the foundation for modern Vaishnavism.
Origins: Emerging around the 2nd century BCE, it centered on the worship of Vasudeva-Krishna, who was later identified with the Vedic deity Vishnu.
Key Scripture: The Bhagavad Gita and the Srimad Bhagavata Purana are the heart of this tradition, teaching that salvation is accessible to all through love and surrender.
Principles: It popularized the concepts of Ahimsa (non-violence) and Avataras (incarnations of God to restore Dharma).
Impact: It moved spiritual focus from complex fire sacrifices to Prasada, Puja, and Nama-Smarana (chanting).
🔱 3. The Shaiva Sect: The Path of Transformation & Asceticism
Shaivism is perhaps the oldest of the sects, with roots potentially stretching back to the Pashupati seal of the Indus Valley Civilization.
Philosophy: For Shaivites, Lord Shiva is the Supreme Reality—the Creator, Preserver, and Destroyer. The tradition emphasizes Yoga, meditation, and the realization of one's own "Shivahood".
