Esta sesión rinde homenaje al recientemente fallecido Javier Marías desde este país norteamericano, con el que tuvo mucha relación. Nos acercaremos en un primer lugar a la presencia de este autor español –y de su padre, Julián Marías, anteriormente– en Wellesley College como profesores visitantes, estancias ambas que ayudarán a iluminar ciertos ángulos de la trayectoria posterior de Marías como escritor. A continuación, el encuentro pasará a centrarse en la trayectoria profesional de este novelista considerado uno de los más relevantes de la España contemporánea. Se analizará también la importancia de su obra en el mundo anglosajón, más concretamente en los Estados Unidos, además de exponer otras facetas de su vida, pues Marías fue un importante traductor, columnista, editor y figura pública clave de la historia reciente de España.

Carlos Ramos es catedrático en el Departamento de Español y Portugués de Wellesley College y el Margaret E. Deffenbaugh and LeRoy T. Carlson Professor in Comparative Literary Studies. Sus publicaciones y su docencia se centran en la literatura y en la historia cultural de la España contemporánea. Marta Pérez-Carbonell es profesora titular en el Departamento de Lenguas y Literaturas Romances de Colgate University (NY). Tras su monografía, The Fictional World of Javier Marías-Language and Uncertainty (Brill/Rodopi, 2016), ha publicado numerosos artículos sobre la obra de Marías y de otros autores españoles contemporáneos.

In this event, we pay tribute to recently deceased Spanish writer Javier Marías from the North American country with which he had a long relationship. We will first address the author’s––and before him his father’s––presence at Wellesley College as visiting professors, since these periods will help illuminate certain aspects of Marías later career as a writer. We will then focus on the profesional life of this novelist, who is considered one of the greatest of contemporary Spain. The session will analyze the importance of Marías’ work in the English-speaking world, with special attention to the United States, in addition to presenting other aspects of his life, since he was also an important translator, columnist, publisher, and key public figure in contemporary Spanish history.

Carlos Ramos is full professor in the department of Spanish and Portuguese at Wellesley College and the Margaret E. Deffenbaugh and LeRoy T. Carlson Professor in Comparative Literary Studies. His publications and teaching center on the literature and cultural history of contemporary Spain. Marta Pérez-Carbonell is associate professor in the department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Colgate University. Following her monograph The Fictional World of Javier Marías – Language and Uncertainty (Brill/Rodopi, 2016), she has published numourous articles on Marias’ work and that of other contemporary Spanish authors.
