In 1975, advertising executive Gary Dahl turned one of the simplest ideas in marketing history into a cultural phenomenon: the Pet Rock.
The concept was brilliantly simple. Dahl sold ordinary smooth stones packaged in a cardboard box with air holes, straw bedding, and a humorous instruction manual explaining how to “train” the rock to perform tricks like “sit” and “stay.”
The joke product became an overnight sensation. At the height of the craze, Dahl was reportedly selling around 10,000 Pet Rocks per day. Within about six months of launch, the novelty had made him a millionaire.
The Pet Rock remains one of the most famous examples of viral marketing and novelty product success — proof that sometimes the simplest ideas can generate massive cultural impact.
