Ute Tribal Land: The Gore Creek Valley was originally a summer hunting ground for the Ute Native American tribe, who called the surrounding peaks "the shining mountains".

WWII Roots: The area's history is deeply tied to the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division, which trained for alpine combat at nearby Camp Hale during World War II.

Founded by Veterans: After the war, 10th Mountain veteran Pete Seibert teamed up with local rancher and guide Earl Eaton to develop the mountain they explored in 1957.

A European Dream: Inspired by European alpine villages, Seibert meticulously planned Vail with Bavarian-style architecture and pedestrian streets. The resort officially opened on December 15, 1962, with its first gondola and two chairlifts. The town was later incorporated in 1966.
Global Recognition: The town gained international exposure in the mid-1970s when President Gerald Ford and his family began vacationing at their Vail home.
