Yumomi is a traditional Japanese method used to cool down the extremely hot waters of Kusatsu Onsen, one of Japan’s most famous hot spring resorts. Natural onsen water in Kusatsu can reach over 90°C (194°F), making it too hot for bathing. However, adding cold water would dilute the mineral-rich properties believed to aid muscle relaxation, circulation, and skin health.
Instead, Yumomi was developed as a solution. Using large wooden paddles, workers stir and knead the water in a rhythmic motion, aerating it to lower the temperature while preserving its natural healing benefits. Over time, this practical technique has become a cultural attraction, with live performances showcasing the centuries-old tradition to visitors. Today, Yumomi remains an essential part of Kusatsu’s onsen experience, blending history, science, and entertainment. ♨️
