Spokesperson: Lin Jian
Duration: 4'10
STORYLINE:
1. According to reports, on January 30, Panama’s Supreme Court ruled that the operating rights held by Hong Kong’s CK Hutchison Group over ports at both ends of the Panama Canal are unconstitutional. U.S. Secretary of State Rubio said the US welcomed the decision. Moreover, a US congressman said that the Western Hemisphere does not welcome China’s malign influence. How does China respond to this?
China will resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the Chinese company. It must be stressed that the relevant words and moves by the U.S. once again expose its Cold War mentality and ideological bias. The international community is quite clear about who is seeking to monopolize the canal, and who is undermining international law in the name of the rule of law.
2. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Monday that she wanted to change the country’s Constitution to explicitly recognize the Self-Defense Forces as military. What is China’s comment?
We urge Japan to deeply reflect on its history of aggression, heed the call for peace and opposition to war by the people at home, adhere to the path of peaceful development, and build trust with Asian neighbors and the international community with concrete actions.
3. The EU announced that it has launched an investigation into China’s wind power giant Goldwind, citing concerns that the company benefits from government subsidies and distorted market competition in the EU. What is the Foreign Ministry’s comment?
I would refer you to the competent authority for the specific question. I want to point out that the EU's frequent use of unilateral economic and trade tools to impose discriminatory and restrictive measures on Chinese enterprises sends a signal of protectionism, damages the EU's image, and undermines the confidence of Chinese companies in investing in Europe. We urge the EU to honor its commitments to open markets and fair competition, cease the abuse of unilateral economic and trade tools, and provide a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for enterprises from all countries. China will resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.
4. In Washington DC today, dozens of foreign ministers from Europe plan to sign a memorandum of understanding with the US to deepen a partnership with the US on critical minerals so as to reduce China’s dominance in the area. Do you have comments?
China’s position on maintaining the stability and security of global industrial and supply chains for critical minerals remains unchanged. All parties have a responsibility to play a constructive role in this regard.
Regarding the relevant memorandum between Europe and the US that you mentioned, I would like to point out that China has consistently believed that all countries should abide by the principles of a market economy and international economic and trade rules, strengthen communication and dialogue, jointly safeguard the stability and smooth functioning of international industrial chains, and promote the stable development of the world economy.
5. A human rights organization on Tuesday condemned China’s detention of journalists Liu Hu and Wu Yingjiao. The two had exposed corruption by local officials. Can the Foreign Ministry provide more details about this case?
