Brownells Gun Techs Caleb and Steve are back to separate fact from fiction and myth from honest truth about gas piston AR-15s. The "received wisdom" is that gas piston operated ARs are inaccurate, or at least less accurate than the standard direct-impingement AR. This one has been kicking around the Internet forums and blogs for a long time. In fact, it's so old it pre-dates the Internet. But wait... Some of the most accurate competition rifles over many years have been the M1 Garand and M1A civilian clones of the M14 - and both of those rifles are piston operated! Early AR-15 piston conversion kits could be unreliable, but nowadays a good piston-operated AR-15 will shoot just as well as a direct impingement AR. For example, the LWRC REPR is piston-operated, and it's one of the most accurate AR rifles ever made. Besides, says Caleb, short-stroke pistons tend to be more accurate than long-stroke, AND all piston-operated AR-15s are short stroke. Steve suggests the "pistons are inaccurate" myth arose from American bias against the AK-47, but that's a topic for another video. So the guys agree here: the "gas piston AR-15s are inaccurate" myth is BUSTED!
