I honestly had no idea that these cars had such an insane amount of mechanical grip at speeds exceeding that of even 140mph.
Mr. McNish, F1 commentator and Le Mans and American Le Mans all-time great, tapped into a zone no one else on the grid could get even remotely close to, gapping the other Audi team by 1.4 seconds in qualifying, and absolutely crushing the track record by 3 seconds.
I found myself utterly dumbfounded looking at his laptime, and seeing that I was 8 seconds off the pace during high fuel load practice on the scrubs. I did setup work, fit on the soft stuff, took some fuel out of the car.....and I am still 4 seconds off the pace. I get the track rubbered in....and I am 3 seconds off the pace. What could I be doing wrong? I felt like I had the right gearing configuration-I felt like my setup was pretty decent. I felt like my PSI and diff settings were pretty good....until I remembered something. Long corners.
If your front spring rate is set too high and you're trying to take super long corners, the car will stiffen up, and the front tyres will start doing the one thing you never want them to do.....overheat prematurely. You will lose tremendous amounts of grip before even exiting the corner.
After I got that sorted, I started shedding off time, but I could not get close to Mr. McNish's insane 1:49.18. There was a crosswind in this session and I just couldn't hang on to the car. There's a reason why this Scottish F1 commentator was once an F1 hopeful and won the Le Mans and American Le Mans 3 times in both respective motorsport series. I missed 2 or three apexes on my flier, and with hot tyres, locked up at the very last corner. I wasn't expecting the fronts to lock up that way in 3rd gear. I didn't want to lose the back-end, so I had a small subconscious correction reflex. This reflex induced the underside of the car move twice, and when you're in a Judd car, and you move the chassis twice through a downhill off-camber corner, instead of committing to the corner and trusting the car's mechanical grip instead, you're going wide-plain and simple. This obviously compromised my corner exit speed leading up to the pit straight, so I lost a tenth and a half through that one corner alone. All-in-all. I probably lost 4 tenths throughout the lap total.
Would this have been enough to beat Mr. McNish? Nah. The man was simply on a completely different level. I'll come back to challenge this laptime in the future, but I'll have to settle for 2nd on the 1st row. I'm not sure if the track temps were this hot at 36 degrees C, but I'll continue to assume that was the case. There's more to learn in this car. I still can't believe how fast this class of car in this era could take corners in 4th and 5th gear-even with steep elevation changes you can only really find at circuit like Road America. Great fun. It's been awesome finally becoming acquainted with the true identity of this incredible machine. Can I say I love the R10 more than the R8? No, but this car is absolutely amazing. We'll be heading to Sebring next. Have no idea what to expect, but really excited to see what the laptimes over there will look like.
