Crazy History | The Border War Over Bees

Описание: In the early 1830s, a border dispute between Iowa and Missouri nearly escalated into an all-out war, all over honey. Known as the Honey War, this bizarre conflict revolved around the unclear state borders between Iowa and Missouri. At the center of the controversy was Missouri's 6th governor, Lilburn W. Boggs, who insisted on a border that would grant Missouri more land.

Tensions reached a boiling point when the sheriff of Clark County, Missouri, Uriah S. Gregory, attempted to collect taxes in the disputed area. The locals, claiming allegiance to Iowa, refused to pay and warned the sheriff he was in the wrong state. Governor Boggs, infuriated by the resistance, sent the sheriff back to demand payment, only for him to be arrested in Iowa.

Things took a strange turn when a Missourian crossed into the disputed territory and chopped down three honey-producing bee-trees, sparking further outrage. Although the perpetrator was eventually caught and fined, Governor Boggs declared this an assault on Missouri and a provocation of war. He sent 800 militia men to the border, while Iowa responded with 300 of its own.

Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed, and the militia commanders refused to fight over honey trees. The border dispute was ultimately settled by the U.S. Supreme Court, preventing the Honey War from turning into an actual battle.
