US Stock Market LIVE: Dow Jones Up 1,000 Points on Rising Hopes of Tariff Deal; S&P Extends Gains | Share Market Live | CNBC TV18
Source: Reuters
NEW YORK CITY – A view outside the New York Stock Exchange ahead of markets opening for trading following days of turmoil prompted by U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs. The Chinese ministry of finance said it will impose 84% tariffs on US goods from Thursday, up from the 34% previously announced, according to Reuters.
Stock markets sold off further in the wake of the announcement.
The futures suggest that the S&P 500 is now on course for a 1.6% decline, the Nasdaq is set for a 1.3% drop, and the Dow Jones industrial average is set to drop 1.7%.
US Stock Market LIVE: Wall Street stock futures rose sharply on Tuesday (April 8), offering a brief relief after three days of intense selling triggered by President Donald Trump’s surprise tariff announcement, which led to the worst market losses since the pandemic. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures jumped 1,104 points, or 2.9%. S&P 500 futures climbed 2.6%, while Nasdaq-100 futures advanced 2.5%.
The S&P 500 swung wildly after more losses in Asia and Europe. President Trump said he would not back off his trade war, reinforcing fears of a global economic downturn.
U.S. stock futures dropped on Sunday evening as the White House remained defiant even after a two-day historic stock market rout that followed President Donald Trump’s rollout of shockingly high tariff rates on most key U.S. trading partners.
President Trump on Monday issued a new ultimatum to China to rescind its retaliatory tariffs on the United States, or face additional tariffs of 50 percent beginning Wednesday. The threat came as Wall Street swung wildly, with the S&P 500 briefly entering bear market territory.
President Trump’s trade war made investors increasingly pessimistic about the economy but he defended his global tariffs, saying those in place had already brought the United States billions of dollars in revenue. He also said that he would cease negotiations with China unless it withdrew its tariff plans.
The S&P 500 opened sharply lower before fluctuating in a wide range, at points posting small gains amid the losses. Earlier, shares in Asian and European markets extended their sell-off. The benchmark U.S. index, which is already 17.4 percent below its February peak, was close to tumbling into a bear market, defined as a drop at the end of a trading day of 20 percent or more from a recent high.
Dow Jones Industrial average futuresfell 979 points, or 2.5% Sunday evening, pointing to another brutal session ahead on Monday. S&P 500 futures shed 2.9%. Nasdaq-100 futures lost 3.9% as investors continued to shed their one-time tech winners to raise cash.
