Research engineer Dylan Bardy is part of a team at CanmetENERGY Ottawa that’s testing a new solar thermal system developed by SolarSteam Inc.
Using a curved mirror in a simple, greenhouse-like structure to follow the sun through the day, the system focuses and captures the solar energy and stores it as heat, which could then be used to power industrial processes or to warm buildings.
Through field testing, the team is measuring the efficiency, durability and other aspects of the system and assessing how quickly it could be deployed across Canada.
This pilot is one of several renewable energy technologies CanmetENERGY is testing to help increase clean energy options for northern and remote regions.
