STORYLINE:
Thousands of Haitians marched through Port-a-Prince on Sunday, celebrating the exile of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and demanding he be put on trial.
A pro-Aristide march also was planned.
Dozens of Haitian police and US and French troops - with US Humvees mounted with machine guns and a tear gas launcher - guarded the demonstration route, ready for threatened clashes between the rival camps.
Thousands of people ran and pranced down Delmas Road chanting "Try Aristide! Jail Aristide!"
Placards demanded the arrest of other Aristide officials still in the country, including Prime Minister Yvon Neptune.
The rowdy protest drowned out the sounds of hymns and clapping that wafted earlier from churches, where families made their way on foot in Sunday best.
Some protesters carried pistols and machetes under their shirts, though there was no violence.
Protesters later burned a huge billboard of the Haitian leader.
