Swedish modernist cantilever outdoor chairs A2 by grythyttan

Описание: When it comes to Swedish modernist icons, the ‘A2’ garden chair is an underestimated chair designed by Artur Lindqvist for Grythyttans Stålmöbler. It’s obviously inspired by cantilever chairs designed by Marcel Breuer & Mart Stam (or should we possibly say the technicians at the Tatra automobile company?). The first version (simply called model ‘A’) was designed in 1930 and exhibited at the legendary Stockholm Exhibition the same year. Lots of different versions followed, and the ‘A2’ is still today the most popular garden chair in Sweden. Simply beautiful, isn’t it?!

Model ‘A2’, introduced in 1935. Seven wooden slats in the back and frame made from lengths of flat steel riveted together.

In 1936 the number of wooden slats were reduced to six.

An upholstered version was introduced in the 1930’s. (‘BK’ upholstered in leather, ‘B’ in artificial leather and ‘C’ in textile.)

In the 40’s the armrest of the ‘A2’ was simplified, the frame was now welded together for the first time and the number of wooden slats were reduced to five in 1946.

In 1954 the frame was redesigned making the chair stackable.

In 1963 the flat steel frame was replaced by round steel.

In the 60’s the version ’P-40’ was introduced for a few years, upholstered in a plastic covered rope.

Between 1987-92 a version called ‘A2 Bianca’ was offered. The wooden slats were replaced by plastic. It’s far from good looking, and sadly the plastic tended to break.
