Welcome back, friends! It’s Debbie from Refresh Restyle, and today we’re turning an evergreen wreath into a fresh, cottagecore spring showpiece featuring a painted standing bunny, soft florals, and a big, fluffy bow. If you’re ready to swap winter for something bright, happy, and handmade, this easy DIY is for you.
In this live craft session, I:
Paint a wood bunny with chalk paste (one-coat coverage in a gorgeous pink, Couture Coral)
Add selective floral details with a background transfer (hello, cottagecore!)
Distress lightly for that handmade charm
Create a layered wired-ribbon bow using my “awareness loop” method
Secure the bunny to the wreath with twine and hot glue for a removable, reusable design
Supplies I used (and easy substitutes):
Evergreen wreath (Walmart; grapevine-style, full and fluffy)
Wood standing bunny cutout (comes with a stand if you’re using it off-wreath)
Chalk paste: Couture Coral (pink) and Bright White
Floral/pattern transfer (I used a background from the Last Chance section; any small floral pattern works)
Small squeegee/dauber and a paint brush
Heat tool or hair dryer
Optional: light sanding block
Posca paint pen (for eyes/whiskers; you can also paint these)
Hot glue gun (I like Gorilla hot glue sticks)
Twine or floral wire (for tying the cutout to the wreath)
Wired ribbons (4 in. wide, mix of solids and plaid; Dollar Tree and craft stores are great sources)
Optional florals (ranunculus are beautiful for this look), raffia for a neck bow, and buttons for accents
Helpful tips from the video:
Chalk paste makes fantastic paint—thick, smooth, and usually one coat. If it feels cool to the touch, it’s still damp.
You don’t have to cover the bunny with an all-over pattern. Spot-stencil bits of the floral transfer here and there for a softer, cottagecore vibe.
Distress after drying if you love character (I do!). Light sanding adds an instant vintage touch.
Make the bow with “awareness”-style loops: cut two ribbon lengths, form loops, stack three patterns, tie tightly in the center, then dovetail the tails by cutting toward the wired edge.
Attach the bunny with twine and hot glue reinforced by a ribbon strip on the back—sturdy, and easy to remove for the next season.
Adjust bow placement and fluff after hanging. You’ll catch me fluffing every time I walk by the door!
Style it your way:
Swap pink for your favorite spring color, or try polka dots or stripes on the bunny for a playful farmhouse look.
Add a tiny raffia bow around the bunny’s neck or tuck in sprigs of faux greenery for extra texture.
If you’re not putting the bunny on a wreath, display it on the included stand—so cute on a mantel or entry table.
I love seeing what you’re making—tell me in the comments what colors you’d use and if you’re team cottagecore, farmhouse, or a little of both!
