Established in the mid-1800s, this small cemetery once served the frontier settlement of Pemberton Ferry—a vital transportation hub along the Withlacoochee River. For decades, pioneers, veterans, and community leaders were laid to rest here before the town faded, the forest reclaimed the land, and nearly all of the headstones were lost to time and vandalism.

In 2019, Wild Cow Prairie Cemetery was nearly erased forever—until local preservationists stepped in, uncovering unmarked graves, expanding the cemetery’s boundaries, and fighting for its protection. Their efforts led to historic recognition and permanent preservation.
