Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi secured a stunning landslide victory in Sunday’s general election, giving her coalition a commanding mandate and paving the way for tax cuts and expanded military spending aimed at countering China.
Exit projections show Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) winning up to 328 of the 465 seats in the powerful lower house — one of the party’s strongest results ever. Together with coalition partner Japan Innovation Party (Ishin), the ruling bloc has achieved a two-thirds supermajority, allowing it to override the upper chamber and fast-track legislation.
Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, has drawn comparisons to Britain’s former leader Margaret Thatcher and is expected to push ahead with plans to strengthen Japan’s defences — a move that has raised concerns in Beijing, which accuses her of reviving Japan’s militaristic past.
The opposition Centrist Reform Alliance (CRA), led by former prime minister Yoshihiko Noda and Komeito leader Tetsuo Saito, failed to halt the coalition’s momentum despite forming a new alliance ahead of the vote.
