What happens if TMJ treatment doesn’t improve your symptoms?
In this video we explain how temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are often complex conditions that can involve multiple contributing factors, including the jaw joint, muscles, neck, airway, sleep, migraines, or other medical conditions.
While most patients improve with conservative treatment, research suggests that around 95% of TMJ cases can be managed without surgery.
However, sometimes symptoms persist despite appropriate care. When that happens, the most important step is identifying what other factors may be contributing.
Depending on the situation, this may involve referral to other specialists, including:
• Oral and maxillofacial surgeons
• Neurologists (for migraine management)
• ENT specialists (for airway or nasal obstruction)
• Dietitians or other allied health professionals
At TMJ Centre Melbourne, our goal is always to help patients find the right direction for their care, even if that means referring to other specialists who may be better placed to assist.
TMJ Centre Melbourne is dedicated to the assessment and management of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain through a diagnosis-led and multidisciplinary approach.
