Alang beach harbours the largest ship breaking yard in the world, and home to one of the most polluted ocean zones. A reflection of human consumption and over population that is generating unprecedented demands world over. Ship breaking is banned by most countries around the world, but because of its revenue aspect, this industry is thriving in this area, and the polluted beaches of Alang reflect the reason behind it.
The longest ship ever built, Seawise Giant, was also sailed to and beached here for demolition in December 2009.
The shipyards at Alang recycle approximately half of all ships salvaged around the world. It is considered the world's largest graveyard of ships. The yards are located on the Gulf of Khambat, 50 km southeast of Bhavnagar. Large supertankers, car ferries, container ships, and a dwindling number of ocean liners are beached during high tide, and as the tide recedes, hundreds of manual labourers move onto the beach to dismantle each ship, salvaging what they can and reducing the rest to scrap.
