Is Walking Every Day Going to Help You Burn Fat?
Is walking every day going to help you burn fat? The truth is walking is probably not going to help you burn fat. If you're walking at a normal pace on flat ground that generally is not going to help you burn fat. Usually, exercise helps you burn fat when it increases your heart rate. Usually, when you're walking on flat ground, your heart rate doesn't increase significantly enough that you could burn fat.
Now the truth is if you do anything for long enough it will help you burn a little bit of fat. But walking is a really inefficient way to burn fat. If you don't have any other options and walking is your only option for exercise, then I'd still recommend you walk, but it's a very inefficient way to burn fat. If that's your end goal, walking is not usually your best option.
How Can You Make Your Walking More Efficient?
Generally to burn fat you need to get your heart rate at or above 50-60% of your maximal predicted heart rate. If you use a heart rate monitor like an Apple Watch or Fitbit, then you're trying to get to a range of above 50-60% of you maximal predicted heart rate. That's when you're efficiently burning fat.
To get your heart rate that fast when you're walking you usually need to be either walking up hills or up stairs if you're at work. Or you have to power walk which I know looks funny; it reminds me of my mom and her aunty friends going for walks. Basically it’s a fast walk or slow jog. You usually need to be doing something like that to get your heart rate that fast.
What if You Don't Like Wearing a Heart Rate Monitor?
If you don't like wearing a heart rate monitor or you don't have one, then the next best way to tell if your heart rate is fast enough to burn fat efficiently - is can you carry on a full conversation without pausing? If you're able to talk on the phone normally or talk to someone else normally without taking pauses, then you're usually not increasing your heart rate enough.
When you increase your heart rate into a fat burning zone, then you usually can't carry on a conversation without taking some pauses. Usually, you're not so short of breath you can't talk at all, but just enough that you have to take breaks when you're speaking.
I'd love to hear about whether or not you use a heart rate monitor like an Apple Watch or Fitbit? I usually only use one when I'm working out. Also, do you love it or you're just meh about it? Let us know in the comments.
