Thoracentesis is a medical procedure to remove fluid or air from the pleural space (the space between the lungs and chest wall) for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. It's also known as a pleural tap or needle thoracostomy.
Purpose:
Diagnosis: To determine the cause of fluid buildup (pleural effusion) in the pleural space.
Treatment: To relieve symptoms like shortness of breath caused by excess fluid.
Procedure:
A needle is inserted through the skin and chest wall into the pleural space.
Ultrasound, CT, or X-ray guidance may be used to locate the fluid.
A small sample of fluid is removed for analysis, or larger amounts may be removed for symptomatic relief.
Conditions that may cause pleural effusion and lead to thoracentesis:
pneumonia, congestive heart failure, cancer, tuberculosis, and infections.
Risks:
Collapsed lung (pneumothorax), Bleeding, and Infection.
Post-procedure care:
Monitoring for signs of infection or complications.
