Freed Syrian inmates describe torture faced in al-Assad's prisons

Following a rapid incursion by Syrian rebels, which put a swift end to President Bashar al-Assad’s five-decade-spanning regime, thousands of citizens – many believed to be dead – were freed from Syria’s prison system Sunday.

For years, human rights groups have reported mass executions in Syrian prisons, and despite the alleged killings and torture faced by detainees, two former inmates went back to the Damascus prison they were stuck in for years on Wednesday. Why? To try and move forward from the trauma they suffered for years under al-Assad’s jurisdiction.

“The death dormitory” is what 35-year-old Mohammed Hanania called a room where he claimed “one to three people would die inside every day.” “We have no solution other than to forgive. But the criminal who has blood [on their hands] should be held accountable,” he said.

“Here, they trampled on my dignity and humiliated me,” 48-year-old Basim Faiz Mawat told reporters at the door of his old cell. “I came here today only to see that truly nothing lasts forever,” he added.

Syrian rebel leader Ahmed al-Sharaa (also known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani) as says he will shut down the detention centres and hunt down personnel involved in the torture or killing of prisoners during al-Assad’s rule.
