Contingency Management is a form of behavioral therapy that uses a system of rewards and punishments to increase specific types of behavior and decrease other non-desirable types of behavior. Contingency Management has been used as a primary, evidence-based practice for treating substance use and mental health disorders for over 30 years with consistent research evidence that it is an effective intervention that improves treatment outcomes (Drake, et al., 2008; Higgins & Silverman, 1999; McPherson, et al., 2018; Petry, 2006; Schumacher, et al., 2007). Contingency Management appears to be effective regardless of client characteristics or pre-existing conditions (Lussier, et al., 2006; Prendergast, et al., 2006).
In this introductory lecture, the basic premise of Contingency Management in the treatment of co-occurring disorders is discussed. The foundational principles of positive and negative reinforcements is reviewed and key factors for implementing a Contingency Management program are identified.
