Hi everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian.
Today I am talking about Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. This disease is caused by a Rickettsia organism. The Rickettsia organism is a group of super small bacteria that cause really bad disease.
A lot of people think the tick causes the Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever disease, but they are just a vehicle that carries the disease. The Rickettsia organism lives inside of the tick until the tick bites down on a dog. The tick will then spit up the rickettsia organism after sucking on the dog's blood for hours.
Once the rickettsia organism gets inside of the dog, this very little bacteria can then start causing some really big symptoms. The symptoms are not always the same, but a lot of dogs will have fever or lameness or warm joints or edema (swollen joints) or not wanting to eat or vomiting and diarrhea.
The veterinarian will always ask if you have gone camping or if your dog has been exposed to a possible tick.
Your vet with diagnose rocky mountain spotted fever with a blood test. These test will confirm that the organism is currently present or is present. Your veterinarian will start treatment for rocky mountain spotted fever, or at least treat the symptoms as they wait for the test results to come back.
This is a really serious disease, so always seek veterinary care ASAP.
