On June 14, 1846, a ragtag group of American settlers stormed the home of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, commander of Mexican forces in California. Vallejo, awakened from sleep, greeted them warmly—he was sympathetic to American expansion. Yet despite his friendliness, the rebels imprisoned him, fearing his influence.
🏴 The Pig-Like Flag
Led by William B. Ide and Ezekiel Merritt, the rebels stitched together a crude flag: a star, a grizzly bear, and the words “California Republic.” The bear looked so much like a pig that locals mocked it as the “Pig Flag.” Still, it flew defiantly over Sonoma, symbolizing a new republic.
