The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is warning that proposed amendments to the EU261 passenger rights regulation could raise airfares and impose new burdens on travellers. The European Parliament’s changes— including scrapping extended compensation thresholds and mandating free cabin bags—have been criticised for increasing airline costs without addressing what passengers actually need. IATA Director-General Willie Walsh described the proposal as a “reverse Robin Hood,” arguing that 99% of travellers would pay more while only a small fraction would benefit.
