How I Got the Shot - Behind the scenes with fashion designer Lory Sun

Описание: Hey everyone, its Lindsay Adler and recently I had the pleasure to team up with fashion designer Lory Sun to create some striking images of her and her designs. Join me for a peek behind the scenes to see how I got the shot.

Concept & Styling

Lory Sun and I have been collaborating together for the last couple of years. She’s made headpieces, jewelry, corsets and other beautiful designs specifically created for me to photograph and be inspired by. For this photoshoot I not only wanted to capture her striking beauty, but also to help showcase some of her recent accessory designs.

For the first shot I wanted to really showcase her strength and creativity through bold light, rich color and an unusual hair style created by Johnny Gonzalez. Then I would feature one of her metal glove designs and utilize gels to accent the beautiful red gem details on the piece.

Gear

For these images I opted for the super sharp combo of the Canon 5D IV with both the Canon 70-200mm lens and the 180mm macro lens. This macro lens would allow me to get extremely tight compositions and showcase the details of her designs.

Lighting

In these shots I utilized 4 Profoto D1 Air strobes. I utilized two strobes with gels-- one gel to turn the background red and the second to create red tones in the shadows. My main light was a 5 degree grid to create crisp and contrasty light on the face. Finally, I utilized a beauty dish with a grid to put shine on the hair and control the quality of the shadows. Yes, it’s a lot of strobes but it allows me to maintain precise control over every aspect of lighting in the scene from direction of light, to color of light, to quality of light, to quality of shadows.


Retouching

One reason I retouch is to remove distractions from my shot whether unwieldy stray hairs or unwanted skin texture. Here the retouching helped to give that professional polish to the images through localized dodging and burn, blemish removal and frequency separation.

The resulting images allowed me to show the beauty, strength and talents of my friend and fellow creative, and I can’t wait to see how she continues to grow and inspire.
