In 1971, the US government saved Lockheed with $250 million.
In 1979, it saved Chrysler with $1.5 billion.
In 1989, it bailed out the savings and loan industry for $124 billion.
In 1991, Pan Am asked for $25 million to survive one more week.
Nobody came.
Pan Am launched the first US jetliner in 1958. It introduced the 747 in 1970. It flew to 86 countries. Its brand was the second most recognized in the world.
And the US government — which had blocked it from domestic routes for 40 years, then removed all its protections through deregulation — watched it die on December 4, 1991.
Then spent $600 million bailing out its pension fund.
This isn't a story about a company that made mistakes. It's the story of an airline the government built, crippled, and abandoned.
