THIS IS WHAT A LEAD WATER LINE LOOKS LIKE! If you have one, you should prioritize having it removed. Even if you don’t have a lead water line, you could still be at risk. If your house was built before 1986, there’s a greater chance there’s some lead lingering in your plumbing system. Solder, flux, and various fittings still contained amounts of lead.
.
Both the EPA and CDC agree that there’s no safe level of lead in drinking water, and its presence can lead to adverse health effects. If you’re suspicious, the first step would be to test your water.
.
Certain filters will remove lead and other heavy metals. These can be whole house, fixture mounted, or even jug filters. If you can’t remove lead water lines or fittings immediately, running/flushing water through your faucets and fixtures CAN lower lead levels. The EPA doesn’t have a unanimous recommendation for how long the flush needs to last - there’s too many variables. They recommend checking with your utility company. Prices vary, but for us, we budget $2000-$3000 for a permitted water line replacement into a townhome. Philly has replaced most of the water service lines up to curb stops with plastic or copper.
