❀ About Ganggangsullae

“Ganggangsullae” is a 5,000 year-old Korean dance, when Koreans believed that the Sun, Moon, and Earth controlled the universe. It is typically performed by women and it incorporates singing, dancing and games.

Under the bright full moon, village women danced Ganggangsullae all night to celebrate Chuseok (the Korean Thanksgiving) in the hope of an abundant harvest, a bountiful life and other dreams and desires, and also to release the feelings of resentment that women held in the patriarchal society during that time.

During the Japanese invasions (between 1592 and 1598), admiral Sun-sin Yi used it as a war tactic. Once informed of the few men on land who could fight, Admiral Yi ordered women to dress up as men and circle around Okmae Mountain to disguise the number of men. The Japanese Navy overestimated the number of Korean soldiers on the land and withdrew their attack.

After the Japanese colonial rule of Korea (1910–45) and the Korean War (1950–53), the South Korean government initiated a move toward restoring the Korean cultural heritage to revive the country’s national identity. During this process, Ganggangsullae was designated as part of the “Important Intangible Cultural Heritage of Korea” in 1966. In 2009, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) listed Ganggangsullae as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

ABRADACO, which is the short form of “Associação Brasileira de Dança Tradicional Coreana” (Brazilian Association of Traditional Korean Dance or 브라질한국무용협회) was born in 2017 as we started gathering every Saturday together in Bom Retiro (a Korean neighborhood in Sao Paulo) to learn more about the Korean Traditional Dance. Since then we started rehearsing and performing to help spread the Korean culture we all love.

❀ Sobre Ganggangsullae

“Ganggangsullae” é uma dança coreana de 5000 anos, da época em que os coreanos acreditavam que o sol, a lua e a terra controlavam o universo. É tipicamente dançada por mulheres e incorpora elementos de canto, dança e brincadeiras.

Sob a brilhante lua cheia, as mulheres dos vilarejos dançavam Ganggangsullae por toda a noite para celebrar o Chuseok (o Dia de Ações de Graças coreano) na esperança de uma colheita abundante, uma vida generosa e outros sonhos e desejos, além disso era uma forma das mulheres liberarem a tensão e ressentimentos por viverem em uma sociedade patriarcal.

Durante as invasões japonesas (entre 1592 e 1598), o almirante Sun-sin Yi usou a dança como uma tática de guerra. Uma vez informado que havia poucos homens na terra que podiam lutar, ele ordenou que as mulheres se vestissem de homens e dançassem pela montanha Okmae para disfarçar o número baixo de homens. A marinha japonesa então superestimou o número de soldados coreanos em terra e cancelou o ataque.

Depois da fase colonial japonesa (1910-45) e da Guerra das Coreias (1950-53), o governo sul-coreano iniciou um movimento para restaurar a herança cultural coreana e reviver a identidade do país. Durante o processo, Ganggangsullae foi designada como parte do “Patrimônio Cultural Imaterial da Coreia” em 1966. Em 2009, a Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura (UNESCO) listou Ganggangsullae como parte do Patrimônio Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade.

ABRADACO - que é a versão abreviada “Associação Brasileira de Dança Tradicional Coreana” (브라질한국무용협회) - nasceu em 2017 quando nos começamos a nos reunir todo sábado no Bom Retiro (bairro coreano em São Paulo) para aprender mais sobre a dança tradicional coreana. Desde então começamos a ensaiar e realizar performances para ajudar a espalhar a cultura coreana que tanto amamos.
