On August 20, 2021, each of the 2021 PUMAS interns presented their summer research project to the Gladstone community and their mentors.
Pemba Sherpa was mentored by Sierra Lear and Rebecca Fang in the Shipman Lab.
The PUMAS (Promoting Underrepresented Minorities Advancing in the Sciences) internship program aims to provide lab experience to historically underrepresented community college students before they transfer to a 4-year institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). It’s funded by the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. This year, Gladstone has partnered with UCSF ImmunoX and the Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) at UC San Francisco to host interns in their labs.
