"The Enchanted Garden" is inspired by the work of Brazilian artist Ana Maria Pacheco, and by magical Ightham Mote, a spectacular medieval manor house in the heart of lush Kent countryside, surrounded by a mysterious whispering forest, shimmering across time....
Commissioned by Music@Malling to celebrate 40 years of the National Trust’s care of Ightham, the piece is part of a larger sound installation Zoë created to be installed in the Great Hall at Ightham, and accompany Pacheco's striking series of screen prints "A Modern Bestiary" and "Sheba and Solomon".
The music weaves together birdsong, Arabic inflections, Tudor polyphony and lyrical song to reflect the mystery and symbolism of both Pacheco’s work and Ightham itself. It is dedicated to Dame Dorothy Selby (1572–1641), whose portraits hang in the Great Hall.
