explanation: while viewing a realtime recitation of the first million decimal places of pi, this idea occurred to me. I had searched for instances of various combinations of numerals and discovered a very obvious trend: the relationship between 69 and 42.
the 42nd place of pi is the first instance of 69. the 144the place is 666. the 242,424th place ends a sequence of 42424242. any other numerological patterns break down before a third example occurs, and this happens all over the first million, other than the occurrence of six nines (999999) at the 762nd place, known as the Feynman Point which I find fits the previous two repeating number occurrences.
now here's how I derived this idea. 42 is the ultimate answer and there's even a 42 letter name of God. but 42 leads to 69. 6 and 9 are obviously inversions of each other but inverting 42 gets you an astrological symbol if hand drawn, or '24' in numerals. the 144 to 666 connection is important because the number of the beast is 666 while 144 is 12x12.
double that number per side of a square and you have 24 rows and 24 columns. at this point I realized this could become fourth dimensional because the human eye detects smooth motion at 24 frames per second and if the digits were paginated at 24x24, there would be enough to animate them as frames. I figured out at that point that 24 seconds would result in the final frame ending in the... drumroll please...
331,776th decimal place.
and to boot, that digit is a 9 preceded by a 2 and followed on the next frame's first digit is a 7. illuminati AND inverted Feynman Point decimal place found in that location.
I speculated that a grey scale font made of solid tiles of gradually darker tones by 10% each step should show something interesting. at this point I was at a dead end because of lack of funds for equipment to flesh this out. that was last year.
this year, just prior to being booted from an online community, the author of the real-time recitation of pi became aware of my idea and produced the initial 24x24 array in two graduated tones: one with 0 starting the black end and 9 being the full white, and another reversed so 0 is white and 9 is black.
I then took those and played with them to arrive at the four way mirrored one that I uploaded as a short on march 14, 2026.
time codes:
0:00 - 1:12 24x24 pi, original
1:12 - 2:24 four way mirrored so the first digit in sequence is at the center where the four corners meet
2:24 - 3:36 four tiles of the four way kaleidoscope
3:36 - 4:48 four tiles of four tiles of the four way kaleidoscope
4:48 - 6:02 four tiles of four tiles of the four way kaleidoscope with a centered tile of same at 66% opacity, itself containing a centered tile of the four way kaleidoscope at 33% opacity.
the music is a custom mix of "Dancing Ice on an Ecliptic" and its palindromic remix, both composed by yours truly. I chose this because 4x24=96 and 96 beats per minute is the tempo of this song about Saturn's rings.
any frame you pause on should show something new and interesting.
